The Outcome

We used some ideas to make the yard look bigger. The pergola works as a workspace during the day and for entertainment after work. A comfortable sofa with a fire pit allows for relaxation. To screen and reduce noise from neighbors we designed a water feature that can be also used as a pond for Koi fish, and a Podocarpus hedge that creates density. The fountain is situated on the axis of the door and the window, which optically widens the narrow space. Across the pond we put a barbecue area that can fit the table but also uses the space retaining wall as a seating bench. Fruit trees and vegetable beds make the space more enjoyable (apple, orange, lemon, and plum).

Plants were selected to complete a modern design of the house and grow well in the partly shaded and sunny area. Thanks to the Eichler house’s concept, big windows and an inside open patio invite the yard to the inside, which creates even more optical space.
